Maternity Nurse Salary & Fees 2026/27

What Does a Qualified Maternity Nurse Cost?

Maternity nurse fees vary considerably. Qualifications, newborn experience, working hours, location, responsibilities, travel and the complexity of the booking must all be considered.

An NNEB-qualified maternity nurse with several decades of professional newborn experience should not be compared with an inexperienced newborn carer, occasional night nanny or somebody whose only preparation is a short maternity nurse course.

Highly qualified and experienced maternity nurses generally command fees at the upper end of the private childcare market. Their professional fees reflect the knowledge, judgement, responsibility and flexibility required when caring for a newborn within a private family home.

Qualifications Matter

The title maternity nurse is not currently a regulated professional title in the United Kingdom. The qualifications and experience of people using the title therefore vary enormously.

A short maternity nurse, newborn care or postnatal course is not equivalent to a full government regulated childcare and education qualification.

NNEB Paragon only introduces maternity nurses who hold a recognised, government-regulated childcare qualification.

This may include the NNEB Diploma or another appropriate regulated qualification in childcare and education. Qualifications, professional experience, documentation and suitability are assessed as part of the Paragon selection process.

How Are Maternity Nurse Fees Calculated?

Maternity nurses commonly charge a professional fee for an agreed day, night or 24-hour period.

The appropriate fee will depend upon factors including:

  • The maternity nurse’s qualifications and professional experience

  • Day, night or 24-hour responsibility

  • The number and age of the babies

  • Singleton, twin or higher-order multiple care

  • Prematurity, feeding difficulties or additional support needs

  • The length and intensity of the booking

  • London, wider UK or international location

  • Travel and work across multiple residences

  • Rota or shared-care arrangements

  • Short-notice or emergency requirements

  • The level of flexibility expected

  • UHNW or fully staffed household experience

  • Accommodation and protected rest arrangements

There is no single appropriate rate for every booking. A fee that may be reasonable for straightforward daytime support could be entirely unsuitable for an experienced maternity nurse assuming 24-hour responsibility, caring for twins or travelling internationally.

Day, Night and 24-Hour Maternity Care

Day maternity nurse

A day maternity nurse provides professional newborn care and parental support during agreed daytime hours. The fee will be influenced by the length of the day, the baby’s needs and the experience required.

Night maternity nurse or night nanny

The terms night maternity nurse and night nanny are frequently used interchangeably, but the title alone does not establish somebody’s qualifications.

Families should establish the professional’s regulated childcare qualification, newborn experience, responsibilities and precise working hours before comparing fees.

24-hour maternity nurse

A 24-hour booking does not mean that a maternity nurse can work continuously without adequate sleep or protected rest.

The agreement must provide safe working arrangements, appropriate accommodation and a meaningful daily rest period. These provisions protect the maternity nurse, the family and, most importantly, the baby.

Professional Fees and Placement Fees

The maternity nurse’s or nanny’s remuneration is separate from NNEB Paragon’s placement or advisory fee.

A maternity nurse will normally agree her professional fee directly with the family. A permanently employed nanny or governess will receive the salary and package agreed under her employment contract.

NNEB Paragon’s placement or advisory fee covers the separate professional service provided to the family. The applicable terms and charges are confirmed before any work begins.
